Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology at the University of Texas at Austin and his B.S. in Microbiology at the University of Rhode Island at Kingston.  His Ph.D. research included the characterization of membrane proteins in the respiratory pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae, which causes chronic pneumonia.

Dr. Smith has taught science at Oxford Preparatory School since Fall of 2014.  Before coming to Oxford, Dr. Smith spent 4 years as a postdoctoral researcher at Louisiana State University where he studied the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on microbial communities in the Gulf of Mexico and associated salt marshes.  During his 6 years at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Smith studied microbial membrane proteins, taught undergraduate science courses, and managed teaching labs. Focuses of his scientific work have included ecology, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry.
