This year for the first time, OPS started the school year earlier on August 14, two weeks in advance of the traditional school start date that OPS has followed in the past.  This was done for a variety reasons, including trying to achieve greater alignment with the VGCC calendar for the 40% of our 11th and 12th grade students who take classes there.  When the calendar was drafted and approved by the OPS Board in February, March 5th – March 9th was selected as spring break for OPS as it matched the 2017 break cycle for VGCC and would correspond with an earlier school year start.

However, since that time, the 2017 – 2018 VGCC calendar was made available, which revealed a shift in the VGCC spring break cycle to March 26th – March 30th.  Upon review of this matter, at the September OPS Board meeting, the board approved a calendar amendment (attached) moving OPS spring break from March 5th – March 9th to March 26th – March 30th.  While this leads to greater alignment for our CCP/VGCC students, we do realize that this may create hardship for families that already made confirmed travel commitments for March 5th – March 9th.  As a result, school administration is more than willing to consider submissions for educational opportunity absences for individuals that submit documented requests in advance.
