Oxford Prep Announces Charter Amendment and Expansion to Include 6th & 5th Grade Rollout

The Oxford Preparatory School Board of Directors has approved a plan to expand down one grade, with the addition of 6th grade for the 2018 – 2019 school year, and expand down one grade again, with the addition of 5th grade for the 2019 – 2020 school year.  At the August OPS Board of Director’s meeting, the OPS Board approved the plan for expansion and submitted the nonmaterial revision of the charter to the Office of Charter Schools at NCDPI for final approval per § 115C-218.8.  Plans are being developed to build capacity to serve younger students, which includes the addition of temporary facilities to accommodate this expansion.

This announcement comes after a number of positive recent developments for the college preparatory public charter school located on Landis Rd.  Last year, construction on a permanent facility was completed in time to serve the final year of the first graduating class.  In addition, OPS has met full enrollment goals this year for the third year in a row, and maintains waiting lists after conducting lotteries in every grade.  The school has demonstrated improved academic outcomes each year, by earning an overall school performance grade of a “B” and graduating 100% of its first class earlier this year.

“Since announcing expansion to the 8th and 7th grades almost three years ago, we have received persistent questions about additional plans for expansion,” OPS Executive Director, Andrew Swanner remarked.  “This latest development will allow students and their families earlier access to the rigor and culture of a school focused on ensuring that college is an attainable goal.”

The open enrollment period for 2018 - 2019 will begin on November 6.  Applications will be available on the school website and in the school office. To learn more about the application process, scheduled open houses, and student shadow days, parents should visit
